Otherside

A poem inspired by doing exactly what the first two lines say. I also received some inspiration from ColdPlay's "What If". When I think about how fleeting each day and my life is, I try and take time to not let moments slip. Telling people I love them often. Thanking service men and women for what they've done. Breaking internalized stereotypes by striking up conversation with someone I feel is "sketchy" or undesirable. Things like that just make me feel good inside. Life's too short to pass those times up. This poem is basically for anyone in my life.

One second I’m on my back
Under a blue dusky sky
The next I could be
Falling off the Otherside
The dogs are barking
Hellhounds, it would seem
Here I am in a moment
Existing for the time being
One second I’m a floating speck
In an ocean of stars
The next I could be
The vapor exiting your car
Bombs might be falling
In just a minute or two
So why waste life away
Living it without you?
One second you’re my friend
Somebody that I love
If the next you walk away
Meet me again up above
Then when the world is void,
We’ll have no more disputes
No money or school or people
To stop us from being true
If one second when we live
Either of us should depart,
The next moment being Heaven,
Just know you have a place in my heart
A special spot where we exist,
Only to be filled by you and I
Dearest friend, I’ll be writing, always
‘til we fall off the Otherside

Words

This is an article I've written and submitted to the ClockTower to hopefully be published in the future. Thank you to everyone that read my "Boulder" article that was recently featured in the ClockTower. Perhaps I'll put it up on my blog sometime. For now, I'll continue giving you guys sneak peeks at things I submit for contests and whatnot. The blog views are approaching 2000. I'm stoked.

Words. They are the love of my life. They’re used to express feelings, tell stories, and describe stuff. I really like expanding my vocabulary to move outside typical vernacular because certain words hit home with some people more than others. Some of my most disliked words are “good”, “bad”, and “okay”. There isn’t anything inherently wrong with them. They’re just so trite. They become little shields we can hide behind when people ask us how we are. I’ve felt this way about a lot of words, but especially in church. As a kid, it seemed I’d always hear the same things over and over again. Words like “faith” and “grace” would be constantly mentioned. I used to wonder what they actually meant. It wasn’t until late in high school that I finally gained some real understanding behind the religious cliches.
Faith, I learned was different than believing. You can believe in something but not have faith in it. I believe that certain things exist, but I don’t necessarily have faith in them. I believe in the wind and I have faith that it will fly my kite. Faith is a forward action, not a passive one. Usually it requires a bit of risk. Tithing is one of the best ways to physically demonstrate faith. Especially in a world of economic instability, giving money back to God can feel impossible. But in doing so, you are physically having faith and allowing Him a chance to show Himself in providing for your needs.
Grace is a beautiful thing and one of the cliches I dislike most. It doesn’t seem like people are aware of its meaning when they thank God for it. Perhaps if you would ask a person what grace is, they could give you a textbook definition. But its more than that. Grace is how we are saved. Grace is God choosing to take us to Heaven even though we don’t deserve it and cannot ever earn it.
Then there were other words that I heard used for God. Words like Father or Master. I’d hear people sing “What a Friend we have in Jesus”, and that didn’t make sense to me. Jesus didn’t feel like a friend. My friends felt like friends. God didn’t feel like a Father. To me, Jesus was Someone far away chilling with God and a Ghost. Not a friend. I preferred the words “Savior” and “Redeemer” better. They felt more theatric. More epic. They really captured who Jesus was and is to me. The Being that saved my soul and gave me a chance for something better.
Words are important. And it is important to know what they mean. Empty religious phrases thrust into self-glorifying public prayers mean nothing. Big elaborate words hold no water when you don’t know their meaning. Prayer and worship become a sloppy soup of pseudo-spirituality. Throw in a some “grace” here and a hint of “faith” there. How tastefully disgusting. It may look appealing, but I imagine it tasting like an old shoe. When a person prays or speaks of God, intention is everything. You can usually tell when someone is genuine. But even if everybody else is deceived by a showman’s prayer, God knows the truth. He sees to our core. He cuts through the webs and masks of our attempted exterior perfection. This also means that even simple prayers are glorifying to God. That includes prayers with “good” “bad” and “okay”. He’d much prefer basic heartfelt sentences to a mouthful of huge meaningless words. God sees past words and appearances straight to what our soul is trying to communicate. Words are important. The way we use words is important. But in the end, its the motivation that really counts.

Coffee Shop Girl

Here is my Valentine poem. I've been wanting to write a love-ish poem for awhile, but never have had much reason to. But this idea has been floating in my mind and so here it is. Have a Happy Valentine's day everyone. Whether single or in a relationshit, make the best of it. I will be working. That is all. <3

There is a silhouette inside my mind
Of a woman in the future, ahead in time
The ideal picture is foggy, and yet a dream
But I imagine I’ll know her, the instant she’s seen
I want a girl that can drink her coffee black
And still enjoy sweeter things, while typing on a Mac
A fellow writer, artist, a kindred spirit with whom I can relate
Someone with dreams and ambitions, to do something great
Someone to calm my nerves when stress abounds
And sit with me awhile when I fall down
A coffee-shop girl with a character, so bold
Who can curse like a sailor, but have a heart of gold
She’ll be a girl with whom things make sense
And I’ll pray to God she’s got chill parents
I hope she and I don’t need each other at all
The best love comes from choices, and so in love, I’ll fall

Laverne

This is the second poem I submitted for the poetry contest. Now I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping that one of them will win perhaps. We shall see what happens.

Dearly beloved Mother, long ago you struggled
Problems were never few
The difference was that there was no one
Who came to stand beside you
The way you’ve remained a pillar
As your boys have wrestled tough issues
Hark, single Mother your youngest is crying
Laying there on the floor
Five in the morning
And you stand inside the door
You will comfort until you die
Carrying love for the boys you adore
Hark, single Mother your eldest’s mind is a web
That he tries and fails to decode
Fighting demons out on paper
So that others can be shown
You will listen until you die
Carrying love for the boys you’ve known
See, strong Mother the sons you have raised
And taught to live right
Your words and impact are never wasted
Though sometimes may be trite
A mother’s love is forever
And it tells me everything will be alright

Wisdom. Justice. Love.

Today I just want to take a second to remember the life for which this day is dedicated to. Below are the words of a speech he gave which are also used in a Linkin Park song, "Wisdom, Justice and Love". It is one of my favorite quotes of all time and strikes at the heart of human nature.

"I come to this magnificent house of worship tonight because my conscience leaves me no other choice... A true revolution of values will lay hand on the world order and say of war, 'This way of settling differences is not just.' This business of burning human beings with napalm, of filling our nation's homes with orphans and widows, of injecting poisonous drugs of hate into the veins of peoples normally humane, of sending men home from dark and bloody battlefields physically handicapped and psychologically deranged, cannot be reconciled with wisdom, justice, and love..." -Martin Luther King Jr.

I love the climactic end that says how these evil things we do and force others into cannot be understood by elements we normally should be living by. No amount of wisdom can explain how humans are driven to commit such atrocious acts. There will never be enough worldly justice to repair the loss of loved ones and the destruction of peoples' bodies. And certainly love is not the cause for the mayhem we see around us.

Quotes like this spark a sense of revolution. It makes me want to do something about the crimes against humanity. I feel like this is what MLK would want this day to make people think about; What they can do to change the hurt around them, just as he strove to make right the wrongs committed against people. I'm reminded of a story.

One day there was a beach full of crabs washed ashore from a storm. A boy walked along the beach, tossing one crab at a time back into the ocean. The number of crustaceans were endless. A man approached the boy and scoffed him, saying that what he was doing would never make a difference. The boy silently picked up a crab and threw it back into the waters, to safety. "It made a difference for that one".

We cannot ever change everything about the world. There will always be people mistreating people or animals or the environment. What we can do is try. Where there is one person saved from oppression, a new life emerges. From that life may come other saved lives. We may never know the difference we make for someone else. And the world will not ever be perfect until the One comes to cleanse it. Until then, let us try to live every single day by wisdom, justice, and love.

New Normal

Once upon a time, I was born. The point at which I arrived seemed like the beginning of everything for me. Until I got older I didn't think about all the history behind me. I was raised in a Seventh-Day Adventist home; A great environment to grow up in. My parents were always supportive and accommodating and loving. As I grew, it became evident that there were parts of my relative's life that I didn't know about. Mom and Dad also got more comfortable sharing things with Luke and I when we matured.

Over the years I learned about my sexually abusive great uncle, grandpa, and great grandpa. I never thought they were that "great" anyways. In my young mind, those things were distant and not an actual part of my existence. Like the Civil War or Jericho. But in finding things about my mom's abusive childhood and my dad's silent home, it was evident that indeed they were influenced. I consider myself incredibly blessed when I think about how differently my own childhood could have been, contrasted with family history. Selfishness, anger, and alcohol seemed to be the roots in my family tree, with sexual, emotional, and physical abuse being the leaves. Broken homes and broken bottles decorated the branches. My home got hung as a morbid ornament as well when my parents got divorced earlier this year. Tragedy.

It seems strange to know so many negative things existed between people, when you see my family now. My mom's mom and her second husband typically celebrate holidays with us separately from my grandpa, his second wife, and my great grandma. And my other uncle (my mom's brother) floats around between the two. At Thanksgiving, a great thing happened. The two sides celebrated together. Rather than two small family gatherings, one whole family united. I think I was the only one that really felt moved by it. Maybe deep down everyone else thought it was nice, but it especially resonated with me. I wondered to myself how this could happen. I took into consideration the years and years of wrongs accumulated. How could anyone ever want to see their oppressor again? In my mind all I could think about was how angry I'd be all the time. I felt that every second seeing the wrongdoers would be like barbed wire around my heart.

But that was when I was micro-viewing the situation; Seeing all the little details from time long gone. The events and actions that took place I thought I could never forgive, had it been me abused. So I put everything in a different light to try and understand. I stepped back and looked intently at the people sitting around the table talking and laughing. Something clicked. Time had passed. Wrongs once vivid in memory perhaps had become dots in the distance. Like sailing away from a torturous burning island and smoke being the last evidence. Life's journey had rowed them all out of the nasty harbors, on to different waters.

A similar experience took place when my brother got into some minor trouble with the law. My dad drove down from Omaha, where he lives now, to bring Luke up there to stay with him for the weekend. While waiting around till the time he could pick my brother up, Dad, Mom, and I sat around the table drinking coffee and talking. For maybe all of one second it was weird, then the moment turned to something else. After all the crap that I've had to endure the past two years, things felt like they were going to be alright. Different, but alright. Maybe it was acceptance. Perhaps some sort of forgiveness.

What I've discovered in this mess of a life is this: We all experience wrongs done to us by those that are supposed to love us. When this happens, the ball is then in our court as to how we handle things. Sometimes people bottle up the hurt and never let the perpetrator know. Others explode in unhealthy rage. Still others will sever all ties, totally detaching from interaction. I tend to do the latter. Regardless of reaction, the choices remain the same. In the case of my family, they needed to detach... after exploding in rage... from bottling everything up. But as time passed and wounds became manageable, forgiveness subconsciously took place, I believe. And now the two sides of my family can be together once in awhile. This life is short and ever fleeting. We can choose to waste away in our hate and loathing for people close to us or muster up love and courage to carry on. As relationships shift in the tide and our boats drift towards whatever is ahead, we have to continually decide what is more important; The wrongs done to us by people or the people themselves. Severing ties is the best option in some cases. But as the cliche goes, time does heal hurt. Anchors of abuse that once held us down can be broken so we may find a new normal in the horizon's sunset.

Alright readers, my blog as at nearly 1000 views. And how appropriate for the approaching New Year? If you have anyone you think would enjoy visiting the Pumpkin Patch and perhaps becoming a member/follower, send 'em a link! Ever forward! Blessings to all.

Roses and Razorblades

These are lyrics/a poem that I've had buzzing in my head for at least a year I think and haven't taken time to try writing it until now. It talks about relationships and their unstable nature. It isn't directed specifically to my life necessarily, but more so to the lives of a lot of people around me. The correlation between roses and razorblades came to me when I thought of the extreme emotions the two cause in people. One can evoke such profound intimate feelings while the latter can end up as the product of the prior failing. Broken love leaves scars.

Hang low
Your head looks like a boulder
I know
There’s something wrong here
What can
What can I do about this?
There are
Times when
You just can’t help feeling bad
When we
Fall in love
It follows a trend
If only we could find ourselves
In a single pond’s reflection
We’d avoid trouble and hell
And properly be fit to search for another
Roses
And razorblades, they are the same
Heart-felt
Love turns into hatred
Ripcord
The ground beneath just fell away
There are
Times when
Cupid’s not a friend
When we
Fall in love
It follows a trend
If we could just know who we are
Discover the person covered in skin
We’d escape the desperate pit of tar
And see things in a different light
Love is
A puzzle to be put together
People
Keep finding pieces below their waist
Heart strings
Are the fragments that really matter
There are
Times when
People are more than friends
But when we
Fall in love
It follows a trend

Red Paint on a White Wall

So as of late I've been doing a lot of internal discovery. I tend to be fairly self aware as far as feelings and thoughts go, but recently its been as if things have been put into a more vivid spectrum of reality. A lot of big ideas have been on my mind that I will probably share in other posts. But what I'm going to mind-vomit over today/night is LOVE. Awww... I know, its not February, and I'll probably talk about it again, but its easier to write about topics when they're on my mind rather than suppressing them for a long time and forgetting the important crap I really wanted to say.

Love plays no games. People may play games with one another and toss Love around, but that only complicates things. Love doesn't play like that. It simply presents itself and we must make choices from there. Whether romantic or friend or family-based. Its a "yes" or "no" question each time, for true love cannot be conditional. Unfortunately, Love is confusing. People, in their imperfection do not always have the wisdom as to what to do with it. Its like a drop of vinegar in a pile of baking soda. Things well up and spill out. Things you never knew existed. Or things you've denied and shoved down for a long time finally reach the surface, unable to be contained any longer.

I remember seeing this happen in one of my best friends one late night as he and I talked. He cracked his chest open a little bit and everything poured out. The confusion. The worry. The stress. The feelings. The happiness. The nerves. The strength and the weakness. The humanness. They all mixed together into one jumbled mess of words that could only be described as Love. I resonated with him. Some of the same fears and concerns he expressed were the things I too felt when I had someone to have feelings for.

So Love is a frustrating yet wonderful thing. Its as if it has an uncontrollable way of working itself into one's mind and refusing to leave until something major shifts it out of place. However, with me, things have been odd these days. In the course of discovering more of myself and just exactly how my inner workings operate, I'm finding that while being single is an amazing thing (given the status of my last relationship, ew), something else is growing within me.

With Autumn being here and the seasons changing, a whole new side of me has started emerging. Perhaps its the side of me I always knew existed. Or maybe it was the side of me I kept locked away. Regardless of the truth, I found myself strongly embracing the artsy part of me. This was mainly highlighted by my taste of music branching out. New band names entered my vocabulary such as ColdPlay, Death Cab for Cutie, Mumford and Sons, Blue October. Music is so important to me, as I mentioned a few posts ago, and these artists especially have been transforming a piece of me in ways only music can do. My self-discovering coupled with the new music had made me feel more in touch with emotions, more apt to say what I feel, unafraid to say what I really think, and satisfied being single without relational hindrances.

A female friend of mine told me its an attractive quality when a guy is content and not desperate for a woman. Though I certainly haven't started desiring men in case you're hopeful, male readers. I've just been finding peace, gradually, more and more. And yet, with all the love songs that pass through my ears, I can't help but harboring certain feelings of romance at the same time. Yet for once, they don't really have a place to land. Like they're vegetables growing in a garden that I'm storing away. Or outbursts of undirected romance that I splash onto a blank wall, creating an abstract portrait of my heart. Its like turning all my insides to the outside.

Someday I think I'll be able to share these things. Though I tend to feel like a clamshell. Shut tight after continuous rejection and disappointment, clouded with gritty sand. One day a pearl will come out. And maybe... just maybe I'll share the vegetables and the painting and the pearl with someone. Someone like me. Someone who doesn't need me at all. They'll just want me. And I'll want them. Really, that is the essence of love. Choice. Not needing, but wanting. This is best seen from a spiritual perspective. It may seem odd to think that God doesn't need us. But it is true. And its what makes everything about Him so beautiful. He has no need, only a burning want and desire for us. That is true love.

Stalemate

A poem written some time ago, yet one of my personal favorites. Inspired by the obvious.

She hides in silence
Keeping me away,
Becoming an island,
Yet still I stay
I approach you and hit a wall
I want to crush it and watch it fall
She’s a mystery
One of a kind
We’ve got history
And a similar mind
We made a breakthrough that night
Our fingers joined under moonlight
Her apathetic barricade
My bubbly shield
Tis our mask, made
Resistance to be revealed
My hopes and fears combine into a curse
You’re just like me only worse
Ever since that time,
I’ve wanted it back
Her hand in mine
Beneath starry black
But time goes by, opportunities escape
You and I are left here to wait

She’s a closed door
A lunar eclipse
Time for action before
The opportunity is missed

U

One of my many love-sick-high-school poems.

Fleeting thoughts
Slip my mind
They chase around
But never fulfill
Everything
Is out of place
I’m alone here
Behind a face
The U-shaped piece haunts
Until it returns
All is incomplete
Like a pool of
Deep emotion
Tides push and pull
Sinking under
The U-shaped piece haunts
Until it returns
I still will wander
Missing a piece
The puzzle apart
Tears to shreds
Chokes out the heart
The U-shaped piece haunts
Until it returns
All remains undone

There Still Remains

I wrote this poem a few years ago for a Valentine's poetry contest in my school newspaper. It reflected a very real time in my life where I was struggling with problems of the romantic sort.

Your train stopped by
Late one autumn
How could I know
I’d hit rock bottom
The pieces flew
In every direction
The image of you
Only a broken reflection
Now I sit in this mess
Looking for peace
Searching for rest
I breathe in this smoke
Regretting every day I never spoke
Despite my crashes,
There still remains
Love in this wreck
Love in these ashes
Without you
I’m lost in my head
Wandering in the dark
Walking among the dead
I still hold onto
The things you said
The way I felt
The way I bled
Your words are
Clear as mud
But there still remains
Love in this darkness
Love in this blood
This all has to soak in
Our silence must be broken
What can I do?
I’ll never forget you
I’m fixing these pieces and parts
There still remain open arms
And love in this heart
